No Sugar Low Carb Taco Seasoning

I have not bought taco seasoning in 5 years….and this recipe is the reason why!

Store bought taco seasoning generally contains a lot of sugars and preservative chemicals.  Beyond that, in my opinion, homemade taco seasoning tastes so much better.

Ingredients
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
1/2 teaspoon paprika
1 1/2 teaspoons ground cumin
1 teaspoon salt

This makes about 3 tablespoons of taco seasoning.  For pan frying taco meat, brown the meat and then drain it.  Use 3 tablespoons of this mix per pound of meat and 2/3 cup of water.  Mix well and let simmer in a pan until water is reduced.

  1. Love your recipes ! Thank you !

  2. Great Idea..Can’t wait to try!

  3. This was so good! I was afraid I would need a thickener, but I didn’t. Tastes just like the package stuff without all the added junk.

  4. How many carbs are in this recipe?

    • Christine says:

      It is just seasonings, so really just a trace amount.

      • I put the ingredients into a recipe calculator with an estimate of 6 servings per batch and it came out with 1 net carb per serving.

      • Brittney Dillinger says:

        Chili powder = 1 tsp = 0.44g net carb
        Garlic powder = 1 tsp = 1.95g net carb
        Onion powder = 1 tsp = 1.5g net carb
        Crushed red pepper flakes = ¼ tsp = 0.15g net carb
        Dried oregano = ¼ tsp = 0.0.7g net carb
        Paprika = ½ tsp = 0.22g net carb
        Ground cumin = 1 ½ tsp = 1.09g net carb

        Total = 5.42g net carb

        • Christine says:

          Thanks Brittney! The question remains how much of the seasoning carbs is actually consumed? I honestly don’t know because most of it is cooked with the meat and left in the crock pot after you drain the meat. I would primarily count just the 2 Tablespoon of the seasoning that is added at the end after draining and then divide it by the number of servings in the 2 lbs of ground beef and add a bit extra to get the consumed carb count. This is a life long way of eating for me so I can’t get too crazy about things like herbs or I’ll burn out.

  5. Very good recipe. Thank you!

  6. This is SERIOUSLY good. I doubled the recipe and used 2 1/2 tbsp cumin instead of 3, excellent! I will use this regardless of low carbing! Thanks :)

  7. Do you have a recipe for chili seasoning?

    • Christine says:

      I don’t, but the ingredients in taco and chili seasoning is very similar. You could try this for chili. I would just add extra chili powder.

  8. I will try this

  9. Crystal Lampton says:

    I found this recipe one stormy night when I ran out of taco seasoning packets. I felt like a fool when I saw how easy it was! Safe to say my family of 6 appreciates this blend far more to those dreaded packets. We have been using it for almost 3 years now! Company thatvhas come for “nacho parties” love it and ask for it as well.
